christmas decor | the kids' rooms

Thursday, December 18, 2014

I wasn't planning on putting Christmas decorations up in Izzy's room this year, but it just kind of happened.  Whenever we're in a craft store she asks me for this huge bag of bright colored pompoms.  After coming across these images I finally said yes.

Welcome to Izzy's room!  All junk piles have been moved out of eyesight.  You're welcome ;)

The JOY letters were what got me started with the pompoms.  I had SOOOO many left over that I decided to make some strands of garland for her.

And what good is pompom garland if it isn't hanging from antlers!  I was worried Izzy would be weirded out by the antlers, but the fact that they were covered the colorful fuzzies seemed to make up for it.  #mommykilledrudolf

The mason jar snow globe on her nightstand is my favorite thing ever right now.  It was a simple DIY using some bottle brush trees that I bleached and hot glued to the lid.  I then filled the jar with a little bit of Epsom salt and some tiny battery operated lights.  I screwed the lid back on with the remaining length of cord and battery pack on the outside of the jar (it's hiding behind the Merry + Bright art I made a few years back).  Flipped the jar upside down and it's magic time!  You should see this puppy at night.

Another stand of garland was draped over her window.  And it's impossible to see in the above photo because of the light, but a tiny silver tray with ornaments sits in her window sill.

Before I show you the lone picture of Sam's room I have to just say that the Second Child Syndrome is real.  His poor room hasn't had any love since we moved in, his curtains are still two feet too short, and all he got for Christmas decorations was a little set up on the table next to his rocker.  Sorry kiddo.  I'll make it up to you next year buddy :)

At least it's pretty darn cute!  I've been having an excited fit over all the toy cars with trees I've been seeing lately.  This car is one of Mike's from when he was a kid.  Love that.

Do you guys decorate your kids' rooms for the holidays?  I'd love to get them each their own table top trees next year and have them pick out an ornament for them each year.  We shall see if I ever get around to it.

Merry Christmas to all of you and a very Happy New Years!

christmas home tour | 2014

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Betcha thought I wasn't going to get around to posting a Christmas home tour did 'ya?  Well, honestly, I didn't think I was either!

This is our first Christmas in our new house, and I am so excited for our family to spend it together here!  And since it is my first time decorating this house, I decided to cut myself some slack.  Decorating a different house can be really tough the first year.  Things you have used in previous homes might not work as well in the new place or maybe you've changed your style.

When I was pulling out my boxes from the attic I realized I really don't have a lot of "Christmas decorations".  I've got our tree, wreaths, garland, stockings, ornaments for the tree, and that's really it.  Every year I think I NEED more decorations when in reality it doesn't take a lot of themed decorations to make a home feel Christmasy.  Grabbing some greenery from our yard and sticking it throughout the house made a huge dent in what I thought I was lacking.  It was free and I love the natural feel it gave our house this year.

Enough chat, come on in!

The swag was an easy DIY.  You can find out  more about it by clicking here.

I left the entry simple.  You don't need too much fuss in this area since it's a drop zone for guests.  The stairway has some lit garland and that's it.  I'd love to find a nativity for the entry table some day, but will wait until I find the right one.

I made some large origami stars using wrapping paper and plain printer paper for the archway leading to the living area.  I used this tutorial on how to fold them.  Sam loves coming down the stairs and seeing them in the morning.  Stahs mommy!  Stahs!!!

Ok so not that this has anything to do with Christmas decor, but I finally got my light hung up in the breakfast nook!  Woohoo!!!

I did the same thing as last year by stringing an advent calendar across our standing mirror.  You can see last year's here.  Again, I was late and so I just ended up putting up 12 instead of 25.  Maybe next year??  The envelopes were a free printable found at The Painted Hive.  She used them to make a really cute hanging advent that I was planning on making, but me and time are on the fritz lately ;)

I decided to use my DIY paper garland (click here for tutorial) from last year and threw my two sheepskins under the tree as a skirt.  I LOVE how it looks like a blanket of snow beneath the tree.  Oh how I miss you snow!!!  The tree topper is a lantern I've had since I first moved out of my parent's house.  It has never had a home until this year when I stuffed it with a strand of lights and stuck in on the top of the tree.  Looks like all that hoarding can pay off!

Oh, and a tip for hanging ornaments when you have a little one around that likes to "inspect" them.  If you have a fake tree forego using ornament hooks and just slide the metal or fabric loop of your ornament over the branch and bend the branch back over the ornament's loop to keep it from being knocked or pulled off.

I love using pine cones as Christmas decor.  You can get them for free right off the ground and put them anywhere.  The ones in the glass box have Epsom salt poured over them to look like snow.

I hot glued this one to ribbon.

And used several throughout the mantle.

I kept a lot of things the same on the coffee table.  I added the wood slide for texture and in the glass lantern I traded out my usual stones and candle for a tree, more Epsom salt and a spray painted fox.

Our master has just one hint of Christmas with this DIY live wreath.

You can find my tutorial for it by clicking here.

That's it folks!

I'll be back later this week to share some of the fun decor I tossed together for the kids' rooms.  If you follow on Instagram you may have already seen some peeks at Izzy's room!

What kind of Christmas decorators are you?  Do you deck all the halls or stick a little bit here and a little bit there?  I always wanted to be a deck the hall gal, but I'm too much of a procrastinator.

child proof door locks | with socks

Thursday, December 11, 2014

The day has finally come where Sam has figured out how to open the doors in our house.  No longer am I able to keep him out of the bathrooms, office, pantry, etc.  He has free reign and he's running wild!!!

While in line grabbing coffee yesterday, I struck up a conversation with a mom of 5 boys.  FIVE!!!  Sam's "Boy Mom" radar must have gone nuts because as soon as she walked up he ran over to her all smiles with arms outstretched.  Um hello, Sam?  Stranger, danger?!!  Anywho, I mentioned the door thing and she recommended using socks instead of store bought door knob covers.  Seeing as how she did this with 5 boys, I'm going to take her advice ;)

All you need is a sock and a rubber band.

Cut about 4 inches of the toe off the sock.  Slip the toe over your door knob and wrap the rubber band tight enough around the base of the knob that they can't pull it off.

Sorry buddy, but it just isn't gonna happen for ya.

His grip isn't strong enough to keep the sock from sliding on the knob.  When you need to open the door you just grip harder.

Do you guys have any tips or tricks you use for childproofing your homes?  Share them in the comments, I'd love to hear them!

slow Christmas decorating

Wednesday, December 3, 2014

I had really wanted to have our house decorated for Christmas before we left for Thanksgiving break, but with Sam's birthday party the week before I just didn't get it done.  Now that we're back I feel like I'm already behind the ball.  We pulled into our housing addition late Saturday night to lights up on people's houses and Christmas trees shining through windows.

Yesterday I drug a few things out of the attic and made a mess while trying to start in on things.  Wish there would have been a way to capture the glitter bomb that went off when I started pulling garland out of that blue bag.  I'm going with the excuse that it has to get worse before it gets better.  The tree still hasn't been pulled out of storage and without the tree I'm having a hard time getting in the decorating mood.  Don't mind the iPhone pics, my camera is dead ;)

Garland was hung on the railing, but I'm short almost 4 lengths if I want to cover all the railing.  Double poop!!!  Fingers crossed they'll still have the same stuff on sale next year.  BTW, why is garland so stinking expensive???  It's not too bad when it's 50% off and you only need like one or two lengths, but after that I feel like it can get ca-razay.  Maybe I'm just cheap.

Messed around with the mantle, but I'm not at all sold on it.  Christmas mantels are so hard for me.  I'd rather shove bamboo shoots under my nails.

The only Christmas decor in the house I'm completely delighted by are Izzy's decorations she made for the dining room.  This girl of mine makes me smile!  I saw her coloring and cutting out the Christmas tree, but I had no idea about the other characters or what she was doing with them!  She did the same thing for Halloween.

Anywho.  I'm just having a heck of a time turning all of my inspiration photos into reality this year.  Are you guys already done decorating?  Who am I kidding, you're probably already done Christmas shopping too!  Next year is my year.  I can feel it!  Next year I'll be on top of everything.  Just don't bet on it ;)
