a fish story

Mike has been wanting to take Izzy fishing for quite some time now.  He even bought her her very own pink princess fishing pole complete with glitter and flashing lights.  Because everyone knows it's not fishing without glitter and flashing lights!  It was something she has been asking to do non-stop since he bought her the pole.  When you would ask her what she wanted to catch you'd get this response, "A fish with pink lipstick... or an old boot."

So, a few weekends ago we headed out to my FIL's farm to finally go fishing.

After only a few casts, she got bored and decided to hang out with Papa Moo-Moo on the banks.

Which then turned into harassing Papa's passing cows.

After many, MANY attempts to bring in a fish with the princess fishing pole we finally had success!  I was shocked she didn't freak when she saw the fish dangling from the hook.  The first thing she said was, "I want to eat it!!!"  Um... yuck, and no.

Now, from the photo above you may be thinking it was my husband that caught that fish.  You would be wrong.

Here's the real story:

When they started talking about packing it in for the day I decided I wasn't going to let my little girl go home from her first fishing trip having NOT caught a stinking fish.

I grabbed that glitter blinking pole and after a couple of casts brought in the fish you see in the photo above.  Yes, it's not a big fish.  But, dad-gum-it it's a fish none the less!  Of course, the pictures don't show that story because Mommy is the only one that knows how to use the flipping camera.  But, it was me that saved the day caught the fish.

And THAT's no fish story.

nesting and gold

The title of this post is a little random, kinda like me lately.

I've definitely been in full on nesting mode.  Cleaning out every drawer, container, room I get into.  Most recently I started digging through my sewing room trying to get things into proper piles so I can plan what I need to purchase when I hit up Ikea soon.  People, I am so freaking excited!!!

I've got quite the pile of loose photos from my early childhood, grade school, and on up to photos taken of Izzy.  I was in Michaels today and staring at me before I even got inside the store was a huge bin filled with $2.00 storage/photo boxes. Done and done. Time to grow up and upgrade the lone celestrial photo box from my childhood (that didn't even hold a quarter of the mess) to several crisp white boxes that are perfectly organized.

Oh, and the best way to organize photos is to get yourself a massive diet cherry limeade from Sonic and toss in some mac & cheese to keep your little one off your back.  Seriously.

I also started in on the nursery today.  While I was laying awake in bed all last night (coming unglued with my dog's snoring and the idiots racing their sports bikes up and down the main road over, and over, and o-v-e-r again) I realized I had the perfect solution to a mobile over the baby's bed.  My husband has a fish mobile that his grandmother bought him as a young boy.  It needed a little tlc so I hit it with some spray paint.  Bam - mobile is done.

Since I had the spray paint out I ended up painting a pharmacy lamp I had laying around.  You know how when you spray one thing you start looking around for another victim?  No, you guys don't do that?  Maybe I'm a little weird then.  Well, it's now perfect for plopping on a side table next to the rocking chair for late night feedings.

If you guys would have told me a year ago that I would have been spraying something gold, I wouldn't have believed you.  But, I'm LOVING the look now.  Have you guys embraced gold yet?

Anyways, that's what I've been up to the past few days.  Hopefully I can direct more of my nesting to bigger projects in the nursery and not toward cleaning out random containers in the kitchen.  Maybe then I'll have some real photos to show you.

MIKAROSE giveaway!

***Giveaway now closed***

The lovely people at MIKAROSE want to offer you guys a giveaway.  And, they were sweet enough to send me a little somethin' somethin' to review as well!

Seeing as how I'm now 6 1/2 months pregnant I knew I wasn't going to be rocking one of their fun dresses, but this sweet little fabric flower belt fits the bill pregnant or not!  I love it's thin braided body, and it's perfect for giving this otherwise boxy chambray tunic some shape.

I'm looking forward to wearing it after pregnancy as well.  You know, on my real waist ;)

On to the good stuff!

MIKAROSE is offering one lucky reader a $50 gift certificate towards anything in their store!

Here is just some of what they have to offer.

This pinstriped top is my favorite.  If I hadn't been pregnant I would have been all over this bad boy.

help shed some light

We have an electrician that is going to be out soon to do some for work us.  I've always wanted to update our kitchen island lighting that was left over from the previous owners to two separate pendants.  It would require the covering of one and the addition of two light outlet boxes (I've no idea what it's called).  That's one DIY I'm NOT comfortable with.  So, I figured while he's here it would be the perfect time to get that taken care of.

Here's my problem.  What pendants should I get???

I know what I like, but what I like can be so stinking expensive I feel like I should wait until we're in a house where we'll be longer term.  I know, kinda silly, but it's nagging at me.

Like EVERYONE, I'm drawn to the industrial pendants.

I like them in silver...

and black...

and I even like the glass globes.

Ok, enough of the eye candy and back to reality.  Here's the current, soon-to-be evicted light above my island.  I also plan on replacing it's matching friend over the table soon after.  Oh, and the kitchen has been repainted since this was taken.  It's now the same BM Revere Pewter as the living room, I just haven't taken any new photos.

Like I said, I'm wanting to find a cheaper alternative to those stunning but pricey fixtures.  Here's what I've found.

This looks the best, but at $250.00 times 2 it's more than I would like to spend.

This version from Home Depot is $99.97 a piece.  Much better price, but definitely not as cool looking.

{via Home Depot}

This pendant from Lowes has the best price out of everything at $48.00 a piece.  But, I worry it might not look beefy enough.

{via Lowes}

And an oil rubbed bronze from Lowes at $118.00 a piece.

{via Lowes}

Then there's this glass option from Pottery Barn for $150.00 a piece, but I could currently pick up two for $269.00.

Here's a full room photo.

So, which do you guys think would be the best?  I've stared at them all so much I can't make sense of it anymore!

Do you have some other sources with great prices?  If so, let me know!

nursery design board

I finally decided on a direction for the nursery as soon as I found those animal portraits I posted about last week.  Here's where I'm thinking of taking it.  Of course, things could always change.  I reserve the right to be a crazy indecisive pregnant lady ;)

1. mobile, 2. fabric clockwise - Suburban Tree of Life, Crisscross, Claridge Wisdom, 3. sheepskin, 4. bedding, 5. fox hook, 6. animal art, 7. rug

I'll be using the main furniture pieces that are left over from Izzy's nursery.  This dresser of hers I picked up from an antique store and painted.

And her espresso crib.

I would love to use, as in it physically pains me not to, the Jenny Lind crib I bought off Craig's List for photographing my Baby Nest bedding.  But, it's completely rigged together and I'm not sure I could ever get it secure enough where I'd feel comfortable putting our baby in it.

Just love the classic lines of that crib though.  *sigh*

I'll let you guys know when I get started in there.  Which, finger's crossed, is sooner than later!

If you haven't already, get yourself entered in to win the Cutting Edge Stencils giveaway!  Last chance to enter is Tuesday August 21, at 11:59 CST!

animal portraits

I've been trying to get crack-a-lackin on a nursery design for our little boy who will be here in a few months.  While I was searching for ideas I came across the most charming, hand drawn animal portraits by Berkley Illustrations.

Aren't they fun!  I just had to share.  As soon as I saw them I knew one or more would have to make an appearance in our little boy's room.  But, which one to pick?!  They have so many fun choices.  Be sure to read the animal bios - hilarious.

Speaking of hilarious...

How can you look at that and not chuckle :D

I'll be back Monday with my ideas for the nursery!

And, don't forget to enter yourself in the Cutting Edge Stencils giveaway!
