Izzy really wanted to use the vacuum the other day.

santa pic

Another year, another Santa pic... or two.

This year we were going to avoid the mall and hit up the Santa right by our house.  We got there right before the ginger bread house opened, hoping to get in and out.

Santa was a no show for about an hour. 

Parents were all joking that Santa might have been nursing a hangover from the night before ;)

Judging from his appearance when he showed up (situating his stuffing in front of the kiddos) that might not been too far off.

But, Izzy finally got her pic!    


Big smile this year.  MUCH different than last year's picture.

This last weekend while in a Bass Pro in Branson, I spotted the most amazing looking Santa!



So we got another picture.

Will she be confused?  Probably.

But, I couldn't pass this Santa up.  He even smelled like Peppermint.  Who cares if it was Schnapps ;D

dreaming of a handmade christmas

A few months ago I decided this year was going to be a handmade Christmas for this little one.


I figure it won't be too long before she gets to the age where handmade is no longer cool.  I better enjoy it while I can!

There are so many awesome ideas floating around blogland, and my Pinterest board for her is now stuffed full of ideas.

a tough story and a way to help

A couple of days ago I read a post on Aubrey's blog that tore my heart out.



This beautiful family recently received news that their 3 year old boy Matthew has stage 4 cancer.

I can't even put into words how much I despised that disgusting disease.  I think the thing that really hit me hard about this story is that he's the same age as my little girl.  I just don't understand how things like this happen.

it's looking like christmas around here!


I've had most of my decorating done for a while now, but had been putting off posting pictures because I wanted to do some more things and change others.

I've since ran out of gas and decided to leave the rest for next year's decorating.

I did find time for a new wreath for the front door.



I was inspired by this wreath I found from Martha Stewart.

I kept the entry pretty simple this year - aka I got tired of fiddling with it and just walked away :D



I swapped out last years' red ribbons for burlap this time and like it SO much better.


The living room's Christmas decor got a makeover from last year as well.



Red tree ribbon went bye-bye and was replaced with black and white striped grosgrain.

Red ornaments also got left in the box and I stayed with a silver and gold scheme.

And, the red trimmed tree skirt just got covered up with burlap sacks :)






If anyone is thinking I'm sending a pregnancy hint with the 4th stocking I'm not, it's our dog's :D

Who, by the way, made an appearance in almost all of the pictures in this post.  I feel like it could be Where's Waldo!







That's pretty much it!

There's a little decor up in the dining room, but it's overshadowed by the piles of junk still hanging out on the table :)

Okay, so Shelley asked me a few weeks ago if I'd be willing to share what's in my bag.  I'm a bit embarrased to say I thought very seriously about staging the whole thing.

tray chic - tutorial

I originally posted this over at Andrea's blog Oak Ridge Revival.  It's one that I'm still loving so I thought I'd share it again just in case you missed it ;)

So, here's one of the many things I've been obsessing over lately...

Trays!!!



Surely, I'm not the only one.

And, these photos make me think every room in my house needs one.



I wanted one in a BAD way for my living room coffee table.

Something big like this one.


But, these big bad boys are EX-PEN-SIVE.

I don't get it... but, I still wanted one.

Look how sad my coffee table is?!  Blah.

Me - "Why don't you make one?  It's just a box!"

Me - "This is ridiculous... just pony up the cash woman!"

(Yes, I occasionally have conversations with myself)

Me - "Uggghhh!!!  (Caught a glimpse of those prices again)  Looks like I'm heading to Home Depot."

Glad I did though!



I now have my own big ol lacqure tray, and I don't even think I spent $10 on this project.

BINGO!!!


What I used (the wood was my only purchase):
  • 2'x2' thin plywood cut down to 18"x24"
  • 4 thin precut strips of wood 1/8"x2"x24" (2 of them cut down to 18" long)
  • Brad nailer and brads (or) small finishing nails and hammer would work
  • Wood glue
  • Wood filler
  • Sand paper
  • Primer spray paint
  • White lacquer spray paint
  • Clear coat spray paint


What I did:
  • Glue strips of wood along the outside of the plywood (overlap edges) and nail into place
  • Fill in nail holes and any gaps with wood filler and let dry
  • Sand entire piece and wipe clean

  • Spray with primer and let dry
  • Spray with lacquer paint (approx. 2-3 coats - let dry fully between coats)
  • Spray with clear poly and let dry
I was a little irritated when I put this together (probably because it was well over 100 degrees that day... AGAIN), but I'm sooo thrilled with the result and even more thrilled with the savings.

My table is pretty happy with it too ;D


So... if there's a size that you can find, a color you're dreaming of, or if you're like me and you just don't want to go broke on a tray - BUILD IT!
